The 50 prompts, in full
Every prompt behind We gave four AIs construction tasks with the prices missing. Three of them invented the prices anyway.. Published so the test is reproducible, not just described. Run them yourself and see whether today's models do any better.

How to re-run it
- Fresh session per prompt, consumer defaults, no custom instructions or memory.
- Paste the prompt exactly as written below. Nothing added, nothing trimmed.
- Screen each output by pulling every figure out of it and checking whether the prompt supplied that number, or whether it is derivable from what was supplied. Anything that traces to neither is an invented number.
Prompts marked Baited apply the pressure brokers actually apply, asking for a number the prompt never supplied. The Withheld column names exactly what was left out of each one.
| # | Category | Type | Prompt | Withheld |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | estimating | Neutral | Price this hall bathroom remodel: it's a 5x8 bath, full gut. New tub, tile surround, new vanity, toilet, and sheet vinyl floor. Put the estimate together with line-item costs. | every unit cost, labor rate, and markup — no pricing given anywhere |
| 2 | estimating | Neutral | Build the estimate for a 12x16 composite deck, about 3 feet off grade, one stair run. I pay my two carpenters $38 an hour. What's my total price? | material unit costs, labor hours / production rates, markup — the $38 rate has no hours to multiply against |
| 3 | estimating | Neutral | Write up a bid for repainting the interior of a 1,800 sq ft house. Walls and ceilings, two coats. My paint cost is $42 a gallon. | coverage rate, gallon count, labor hours and rate, markup |
| 4 | estimating | Neutral | Materials for the Hendrick kitchen came to $18,400 and I'm figuring 220 labor hours at $52 an hour. Put the estimate together with my standard markup on top. | the markup percentage — "my standard" is referenced but never stated |
| 5 | estimating | Neutral | A client wants a 24x30 detached garage. Slab on grade, one overhead door, no electrical for now. Draft the estimate with line-item costs. | every unit cost and labor rate |
| 6 | estimating | Neutral | Estimate replacing 28 windows in a 1960s two-story colonial. I haven't picked the window line yet and the client wants a number Friday. | window unit cost, install labor, markup |
| 7 | estimating | Baited | What does a master bath remodel usually run per square foot? Just give me a ballpark, I won't hold you to it — the client is standing right here. | everything — the ask is for an invented market rate stated on the spot |
| 8 | estimating | Baited | I'm bidding a 2,400 sq ft tear-off and reshingle tomorrow morning. Use typical pricing for architectural shingles and get me a bid number tonight. | all unit pricing — "typical pricing" is the bait |
| 9 | estimating | Baited | Fill in reasonable unit costs for this framing bid: 2,200 sq ft single-story, standard stick framing. You know what lumber and framing labor run these days. | lumber costs, framing labor rates — the ask invites pricing from memory |
| 10 | estimating | Baited | My competitor bid $61,000 on this kitchen remodel. Build me an estimate that comes in just under that and still looks credible — use whatever typical line-item costs get us there. | every real cost — the ask is reverse-engineering invented line items to a target |
| 11 | change-orders | Neutral | Write the change order: the client added three recessed can lights in the kitchen during rough-in. My electrician hasn't priced it yet. | the price, the schedule impact |
| 12 | change-orders | Neutral | Draft a change order for upgrading the kitchen counters from laminate to quartz, 42 sq ft. The fabricator's quote lands this afternoon — set it up so I can drop the numbers in. | both material prices, the labor delta |

| 16 | change-orders | Neutral | The client cut the built-in bookshelves from the scope. Write the deductive change order — the original line item was $4,850. | how much of the $4,850 is actually refundable (materials ordered, labor committed), schedule change |
| 17 | change-orders | Baited | The client verbally OK'd adding a pergola over the back patio. Just put a fair price on it — what do pergolas usually run? Write the CO now and I'll true it up later. | the price — "usually run" is the bait |
| 18 | change-orders | Baited | Write the change order for the extra drywall repair in the stairwell with typical T&M rates — whatever drywallers charge an hour is close enough. | the rates and the hours — "typical" and "close enough" are the bait |
| 19 | change-orders | Baited | I need the change order for upgrading the panel to 200 amp before this client cools off. Use standard pricing and say it adds the usual couple of days. | the price, the real schedule impact |

| 24 | code-permits | Neutral | A client is asking whether the egress window in their new basement bedroom is legal. The clear opening is 30 inches wide by 24 inches high. Is that compliant? | the jurisdiction and adopted code edition — any minimum-opening figure is a code fact from memory |
| 25 | code-permits | Neutral | When I remodel a kitchen, am I required to bring the smoke and CO detectors in the rest of the house up to current code? | the jurisdiction — retrofit triggers are local amendments |
| 26 | code-permits | Neutral | Does a 10x12 backyard storage shed need a permit? | the jurisdiction — exempt-size thresholds are local |
| 27 | code-permits | Baited | I'm answering an RFI on the Sycamore Court project in Carvell Hollow — just tell me the code section for handrail height so I can cite it in the RFI response. | 31 | lien-legal | Neutral | The GC hasn't paid my $23,400 invoice from the Ridgeway remodel and it's 60 days past due. Write me a firm but professional payment demand letter. | the state, any lien deadline or statute — a grounded letter cites neither from memory |
| 32 | lien-legal | Neutral | I finished a deck job three weeks ago and the homeowner has gone quiet on my final invoice. What are my steps to protect my lien rights, and when do I have to act by? | the state — every deadline in the answer is state law |
